St Piran is the patron saint of Cornwall and name of is its flag. The white of the cross is the white hot tin than was mined in the area and the background is the black of the ore. St Piran's Day is celebrated every March throughout the county but no more significantly than on the sand dunes of Perran Sands near Perranporth where St Piran first arrived and built an oratory here, still preserved beneath the dunes. The celebrations take the form of a play about the story of St Piran and the acts performed in various historical places in the dunes are followed by a procession of spectators holding flags and daffodils.
