Forest fires are a frequent occurrence in the pine forests of the Canary Islands. Some fires are caused by human activity which can be accidental or deliberate. Other fires are completely natural and have been occurring for millions of years on the islands. The Canarian pine tree (Pinus canariensis) has adapted to survive these fires and, even after intense burning, the trees can regenerate within a few years.
