April 11, 2018 - Munich, Bavaria, Germany - Handcuffs hanging from the Maxmonument. The Green Party Youth (Gruene Jugend) of Munich, along with 120 members of the SPD, JuSos, Mut Bayern, and die Linke demonstrated against the forthcoming Polizeiaufgabengesetze (PAG, Police Assignment Laws) that give police in Bavaria sweeping secret police-like powers that are alleged to be threats to Germany’s model democracy. The CSU party claims the PAG is to protect democracy. The Green Party has threatened complaints based on violations of Germany’s Constitution. Also in attendance were politicians Florian Ritter (SPD-MdL), Katharina Schulze (Gruene-MdL), Dominik Krause (Gruene-Stadtrat), Claudia Stamm (Mut-MdL), Ates Gurpinar (die Linke). Demonstrators also expressed fears for not fitting the CSU’s extremely conservative views..Rounds of protests and intense discussions are now underway against the PAG, which were conceived by Bavaria’s CSU. The new laws will turn Bavaria’s police into a secret police, according to critics and historians and give them powers not seen since the Gestapo in 1945. The police, without warrants or judicial review, will be allowed to detain anyone without charges for three months and eventually indefinitely, monitor, read, delete, and alter communications- the latter being violations of chains of evidence policies. The consequences for press freedom are also in question, as just last week, further clauses were added that appear to directly target journalists and will compromise sources. The Bavarian police already have numerous complaints regarding press freedom restrictions. (Credit Image: © Sachelle Babbar via ZUMA Wire)
