Urged by the desire to see conditions in Russia for himself, he went from Toronto to Hull, hitchhiked to London and managed to get a passage to Russia. Urged by the desire to see conditions in Russia for himself, he went from Toronto to Hull, hitchhiked to London and managed to get a passage to Russia. From there he visited Hashed, Holy City of the Persians and went on to India and Burma, where he slept in monasteries. He cycled through Burma to Siam and going through to Singapore he paid for a passage to Shanghai by playing chess with his skipper.
