Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, 15th century French patriot and martyr, 18th century. Joan (St Jeanne d'Arc) (c1412-1431) in armour and carrying a sword. In the margins are vignettes of episodes in her life including the coronation of Charles VII at Reims, her wounding outside Paris, and her burning at the stake in the market place at Rouen, 30 May 1431.

Joan said she saw visions of saints instructing her to support Charles VII and recover France from English domination. Would be French King Charles VII sent Joan to the siege of Orléans as part of a relief army following which the siege was lifted only nine days later. Several additional swift victories boosted French morale and paved the way for the final French victory at Castillon in 1453.
