Gloria Funicular, Ascensor da Glória, Lisbon, Portugal. The funicular, public tram, also known as Elevador da Gloria leaving Restauradores Square on Avenue da Liberdade in central Lisbon to climb a 17.7% grade 265 meters (870 ft) to the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, a viewpoint in the Principe Real neighborhood overlooking Lisbon. The Glória funicular began operating in 1885 and was declared a Portuguese national monument in February 2002. The Funicular is a two-car system with the wheeled cars connected to opposite sides of one cable that runs both sides of the length of the track. The cars ascend and descend each acting as a counterbalance. The original system was powered by water, then steam and in the early 1900s electricity. The three existing Funicular systems in Lisbon have become a popular tourist attraction and a convenient way to traverse the city’s hills.
