During the 14 months that the plague spread through the village of Eyam, the plague claimed 260 lives of the 800 people in the village. The first of these deaths occured in the plague cottages in Eyam. The plague first arrived in these cottages when a parcel arrived for the tailor, George Viccars. The parcel contained not only some cloth but also the plague. George Viccars was the first to die from the plague.
