EDISON, Thomas Alva (Milan, Ohio, 1847-West Orange, New Jersey, 1931). American inventor. Among his most important inventions include the phonograph (1877) and the incandescent lamp (1879). In 1927 he was appointed member of the "National Academy of Sciences".
