James Lewis smashes auction World Record Over £57, 000 raised for charity Friday 29 November 2013: Auctioneer and TV personality James Lewis has tonight completed his marathon attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest auction ever taken by a single auctioneer. His gavel hammered down at 20:30 concluding a 26-hour marathon which saw the Cash in the Attic, Flog It! and Antiques Road Trip star sell nearly 2, 000 individual donated lots and raise an on the night total of £57, 218. James smashed the previous unofficial record by an incredible 17 hours, and beat the 24-hour target Guinness World Records stipulated to create an official record by two clear hours. The final lot to be sold was the gavel itself, which fetched £190. The Grand Charity Auction, held at the Westfield Derby Shopping Centre in Derbyshire, was created to raise money for ten local and national charities, including the Tiny Tim Trust, Derbyshire Toy Library Network, Derby Air Cadets, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, the Born Free Foundation and the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. The auction saw a wide range of lots sold with the sums bid ranging from just £1 to £11, 500 paid by a local man for a brand new Vauxhall Corsa car. Items to attract particular attention included a guitar made, played and signed by Queen legend Brian May (£5300), a just-launched PlayStation 4 games console (£480) and an Albert Square sign signed by the cast of EastEnders (£360). James said: “I am absolutely shattered but utterly elated. The amount we have raised through this marathon challenge has exceeded all our expectations by an enormous margin. We had hundreds of bidders here in Westfield Derby jostling with online bidders as far away as China and the US, making for an electric atmosphere throughout which just kept me going. “But it’s important everyone understands I have just been the mouthpiece for this, and there’s been an incredible team of volunteers working behind the scenes for almost a y
