6th March 2022, New York, NY. People queued outside the Chinatown Community Fridge food bank located outside Chung Pak low income senior citizen housing in Manhattan Chinatown. The food pantry was founded by Stuyvesant High School student Marilyn Shi in response to food insecurity and high poverty levels among Asian Americans living in Chinatown; an epidemic exacerbated by the Covid 19 pandemic. The fridge is staffed daily with set opening and closing hours; typically open when volunteers arrive to stock the fridge, and close once food runs out. The volunteers stock and distribute perishable items donated by various organizations and community partners, the volunteers also set a limit on the number of food items each person can obtain from the food pantry to ensure fairness for all those queued.
