RMD0EJCF–Mossy Stone Stairway at Caernarfon Castle in Wales | CAERNARFON, Wales — A moss-covered stone stairway climbs through a pointed archway inside Caernarfon Castle in Gwynedd, North Wales. Work began in 1283 under King Edward I, with master mason James of St George directing the design. The curtain walls reach up to 20 feet (6 m) thick at the base and are threaded with newel stairs and mural galleries linking the castle's polygonal towers. RMD0EJBD–Mural Passage with Rope Handrail at Caernarfon Castle in Wales | CAERNARFON, Wales — A narrow mural passage threads through the thick walls of Caernarfon Castle in Gwynedd, North Wales, lit by a slit window and lined with a rope handrail. The curtain walls, up to 20 feet (6 m) thick at the base, hide galleries like this one inside the masonry. The castle was begun in 1283 under King Edward I and master mason James of St George. Passages within the wall let defenders reach arrow loops and towers while staying under cover. Stepped stone floors show how the route rises and turns inside the wall.

Built from 1283 under Edward I's master mason, James of St George, the castle's interior rooms once housed the royal household and administrative offices of the newly conquered principality. Exposed timber roof beams and mural stairways typify the castle's largely unrestored medieval fabric.

King Edward I began the fortress in 1283 under master mason James of St George, threading mural passages and newel stairs through walls up to 20 feet (6 m) thick at the base. The shouldered lintel, built on corbelled stonework, is a form associated with the castle's medieval doorways and gives the "Caernarfon arch" its name. The castle anchors the UNESCO World Heritag
