Fort Boyard stands on a sandbank in the sea between the island of Aix (Île d'Aix) and the Île d'Oléron, Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. The fort is clearly visible from the island's ferry landing. Behind it stretches a coast with a sandy beach and forest, and a sailing boat lies on the water to the left. Fort Boyard can only be visited by boat. It gained international fame through the adventure game show "Fort Boyard". The format was adapted in over 33 countries from 1990 onwards. It is considered the most successful French television export, with a huge international audience.
