Lying on these original wooden loungers was the central element of tuberculosis treatment in Swiss sanatoriums such as the Schatzalp in Davos between around 1870 and 1950, based on the assumption that lying quietly for hours in the fresh, cool and pure mountain air strengthens the body's self-healing powers and has a favourable effect on the course of the disease.
