Image trends in advertising – September 2015

In December 2024 we retired the Stockimo app, but we’re still accepting Smartphone photos. You can read the latest update here. If you’re looking to upload your mobile phone photos to Alamy you can sign up here.

This blog article from 2015 has been kept live for archival purposes.

Want to know what’s new in the world of advertising? We’ve spoken to some of our key commercial clients, account managers and researchers to find out what image trends they’ve been seeing over the last few months.

On top of new, emerging image trends used in advertising campaigns, there are some key subjects that have been around for years, including travel, technology and lifestyle. Although these subjects have longevity, the style of photography, how the images are being shot, what type of models are being used and the type of post-production techniques have changed.

Here’s a rundown of what our research uncovered for four of the most popular subjects…

Technology

Technology is everywhere and it plays a huge part in all our lives. Staying connected is something that everyone is doing, so it’s no surprise that it has become a huge trend in advertising. You will often see images of people using technology in advertising campaigns, even if the product that is being promoted isn’t directly related to technology. We expect to see the latest tablets, phones or TVs in lifestyle imagery to keep it current and relevant.

Travel

Travel imagery has been popular in advertising and design for a long time, but throughout the years its style has evolved. In the last few months there has been a growing trend for point-of-view images, as these give the viewer the feeling of being right there in the shot.

One of our travel clients told us “It’s all about using an image that gives a personal experience, something people really want right now is authenticity and that experiential feel. For example a shot on the street of a local neighbourhood is preferable to a generic skyline. A stock photo that doesn’t feel like a stock photo.”

Lifestyle

Much like travel photography, lifestyle photography is pretty much always on trend. It’s the style in which the photography is shot that changes. Right now there is a high demand for candid shots showing authentic moments – a more documentary, photojournalistic approach to lifestyle imagery.

It’s not so much about the main event anymore either, it’s the things that happen outside of that. For example, when you go for a run you might also chat with friends, drink water, or take a break – those are the images people want to use in advertising at the moment.

Still life

With the rise of mobile photography, and the popularity of apps like Instagram and Hipstamatic, there has been a change in the style of still life photography that is being used in advertising and design projects. Trends include double exposure, soft light images and other traditional film techniques now available through smartphones. Not sure what we mean? Check out our Stockimo category.
