The Marble Arch Inn occupies a corner site at Rochdale Road and Gould Street, near Manchester city centre. The present building dates from 1888 and was designed by local architects Darbyshire and Smith as a brewery show house. It replaced an earlier pub and was constructed with buff brick above a richly treated ground floor. Although the name suggests marble, the reddish stone at street level is polished Shap granite. Historic England lists the building at Grade II. The exterior includes Gothic-influenced openings, granite columns, shaped arches, decorative bands and an elaborate roofline. Inside, the long bar is renowned for glazed brick walls, a barrel-vaulted ceramic ceiling, a detailed frieze and a sloping mosaic floor. These features were concealed during twentieth-century alterations before being revealed again, helping the pub gain CAMRA recognition for an interior of outstanding national historic importance. Marble Brewery was founded behind the pub in 1997, giving the premises an important place in Manchester’s independent brewing history. Beer production moved to larger premises in Salford in 2019, while The Marble Arch remained the brewery’s flagship pub and a destination for cask ale, craft beer, food and hospitality.
