. BBC Media City UK Salford Quays Manchester Lancs England. Photographed on 1 June 2013. The recorded location is Media City UK, Salford Quays, Manchester, England UK. MediaCity at Salford Quays opened in 2011 as a major new base for broadcasting, digital and creative industries, including large BBC operations and later ITV and many technology businesses. It grew from the regeneration of the former Manchester Docks, which had declined after the containerisation era. In 2026 Salford City Council describes MediaCity and the Quays as entering another phase of expansion, with plans for the district to grow substantially and add more homes, jobs and public spaces. Salford Quays occupies the former Manchester Docks, once the inland terminus of the Manchester Ship Canal. After the docks closed in 1982, large-scale regeneration transformed derelict wharves into housing, offices, cultural venues and eventually MediaCity. Salford City Council now describes the Quays as one of Europe's most successful waterfront regeneration projects, and in 2026 further growth is planned around new homes, technology, culture and improved public space. The wider historical story is that broadcasting has repeatedly reshaped where creative work happens, from radio studios and regional television centres to large digital production campuses; BBC buildings, programme graphics and studio complexes document the infrastructure behind news, entertainment and public-service broadcasting. The historical context is that seasonal and low-light photography can emphasise the relationship between natural conditions and the built environment; Dusk, snow, mist or dramatic cloud often reveal lighting, silhouettes and reflective surfaces that are less apparent in ordinary daylight. In the present 2026 context, mediaCity at Salford Quays remains one of the UK's major broadcasting, digital and creative clusters, while the wider Quays continues a new phase of residential and commercial growth; Earlier.
