. The Opéra de Lyon stands in the city centre in the soft light of dusk, combining an elaborate nineteenth-century stone frontage with the prominent dark barrel-vaulted roof added during its modern reconstruction. The rounded roof rises well above the older lower façade, making the building's two major architectural periods readable in a single view. The Opéra de Lyon is seen from across the square at dusk. Its nineteenth-century stone colonnade and arched ground-floor openings support a striking modern arched glass-and-steel roof created during the Jean Nouvel redevelopment. The broad view shows the curve of the upper addition against the evening sky, the illuminated entrance level and pedestrians crossing the foreground of Place de la Comédie. Beneath the curved upper structure, tall windows and the rhythm of the historic masonry face the public square. Small figures of pedestrians along the pavement and open space provide a sense of scale against the large performing arts building. Its architecture has become a recognisable Lyon landmark because of the visible meeting of nineteenth-century civic design and late twentieth-century modernism. In the photograph the sky's pale colour and the evening light draw attention to the silhouette of the roof and the warm tones of the stonework. Its defining subject is the precise contrast between the roof profile, the older façade and the light at dusk. Lyon’s opera building is shown at dusk with its monumental nineteenth-century stone façade under a high modern curved glass-and-steel roof. The old frontage has a sequence of round arches and sculptural detail, while the dark glazed roof forms a broad semicircular silhouette against pink-blue clouds. Small figures cross the paved square in front. The juxtaposition of historic architecture and Jean Nouvel’s later renovation is the central architectural subject. The rounded black roof of the Opéra de Lyon rises above the preserved pale stone facade.
