More information:

Archival concert poster advertising The Beatles at Northwich Memorial Hall, Cheshire, on Saturday 6 July 1963, with support from The Cadillacs and The Psychos, capturing the rapid rise of British beat music and Beatlemania in the early 1960s. The bill was promoted by Lewis Buckley Entertainments Ltd and advertised admission at ten shillings, with dancing from 7.45pm until 11.45pm and the promise of usual late transport. The same poster also promotes a second Saturday show on 13 July headlined by American rock and roll star Gene Vincent, backed by HMV recording artists The Outlaws, with The Denver Six featuring Rikki Jacks, Danny Havoc and The Ventures also listed. The Beatles appearance on 6 July was one of six performances by the Liverpool group at Northwich Memorial Hall during 1962 and 1963, illustrating how provincial town halls and dance venues helped build their audience before and during their breakthrough to national fame. Their July 1963 Northwich date came during an extraordinary year in which the group moved from regional popularity to mass British stardom. The bold red, yellow, black and cream typography, oversized band names, old pre-decimal ticket prices and densely packed supporting acts are characteristic of British live-music advertising of the period. Northwich Memorial Hall stood on Chester Way and became an important local entertainment venue, hosting numerous major British and international performers. The original hall later closed and was demolished, with Northwich Memorial Court opening on the site in 2015. This poster is a strong visual record of early Beatles touring history, 1960s youth culture, Merseybeat, British rock and roll, local music promotion, concert memorabilia and the era when major acts regularly appeared in modest civic halls across northern England. Their debut LP Please Please Me had been released in March 1963, making this a document from the months immediately before Beatlemania reached its autumn peak.
