More information:

Kilmarnock Football Club stadium frontage at Rugby Park in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland, with prominent blue and white “KILMARNOCK” and “Est. 1869” signage above the main entrance. Founded on 5 January 1869, Kilmarnock FC is Scotland’s oldest professional football club and is commonly known as Killie. The club has played at Rugby Park since 1899, when the redeveloped ground opened with a Scottish League Division One match against Celtic that finished 2-2 in front of more than 11, 000 spectators. Rugby Park has been central to the sporting identity of Kilmarnock for well over a century and has staged domestic league and cup football, European competition and international matches. Kilmarnock’s honours include the Scottish League championship in 1964-65, Scottish Cup victories in 1920, 1929 and 1997, and the Scottish League Cup in 2012. The club’s history also includes European campaigns, with its first continental tie against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1964 and later appearances in UEFA competition. Rugby Park was requisitioned for the war effort during the Second World War and returned to football after 1945. The modern stadium remains the home of Kilmarnock FC and a focal point for supporters from Ayrshire and beyond. The frontage photographed here carries the club crest and founding year, emphasising a football institution whose roots reach back to the early development of the organised game in Scotland. The entrance, brick facade, blue branding and historic 1869 date make the scene useful for editorial coverage of Scottish football, club heritage, stadium architecture, matchday culture, sporting history, Kilmarnock town identity and the long-established place of professional football in Ayrshire. Kilmarnock play in blue and white and have a rivalry with Ayr United. Rugby Park’s record attendance is 35, 995 for a Scottish Cup quarter-final against Rangers in March 1962, underlining the ground’s place in Scottish football.
