Passengers and holidaymakers inside the modern Terminal 2 departures area at Manchester Airport, Greater Manchester, England, UK, illustrating air travel during a busy bank holiday and public holiday getaway period. Travellers with hand luggage and cabin baggage walk through the bright contemporary terminal while other passengers wait beside departure gates A9 and A11, with digital information screens, boarding signage and seating visible throughout the passenger area. A Cathay Pacific flight is displayed at one of the gates, highlighting Manchester Airport's role as a major international gateway connecting northern England with destinations across Europe, Asia, North America and beyond. Terminal 2 has been transformed through Manchester Airport's decade-long £1.3 billion investment programme, which began in 2015 and substantially expanded and modernised the airport's passenger facilities. A major Terminal 2 extension opened in 2021, doubling the terminal's overall capacity, followed by further redevelopment of the original building, including new check-in facilities, security areas, departure lounges, retail, restaurants and passenger services. By 2025 the expanded departure lounge was opening in stages and the final airlines were moving into Terminal 2. By March 2026 the airport had become a two-terminal operation, with Terminal 1 closed and the transformed Terminal 2 handling more than 75 per cent of Manchester Airport passengers. The development forms the centrepiece of one of the largest airport infrastructure projects undertaken in the UK outside London. Manchester Airport handled around 32 million passengers during 2025, reinforcing its position as a major gateway for business, leisure and visiting-friends-and-relatives travel. Scenes such as this become particularly familiar around UK bank holidays, school holidays and summer getaway weekends, when increased passenger numbers place additional demand on airport security, baggage handling, boarding gates
