More information:

Low-angle exterior view of Norwich City Hall photographed from the Bethel Street side at dusk in Norwich, Norfolk, England. The composition is dominated by the building’s tall red brick tower, which rises above the substantial municipal offices and forms one of the most recognisable features of the Norwich skyline. Blue evening sky, scattered clouds and a mature leafy tree frame the architecture, while the upward viewpoint emphasises the height and monumental character of the civic landmark. Norwich City Hall was designed by architects Charles Holloway James and Stephen Rowland Pierce following a national architectural competition and was formally opened in 1938. Its restrained interwar design combines Scandinavian-influenced modernism, Art Deco detailing and traditional civic monumentality. The long elevations use warm brick above solid stone lower storeys, with carefully proportioned windows and relatively little applied decoration. A green copper feature crowns the tower and adds a contrasting colour to the red masonry. The building was created as the headquarters of local government in Norwich and continues to accommodate the city’s civic and administrative functions. Its scale and commanding tower reflected the confidence placed in municipal government and public service during the interwar period. The architecture also forms part of the wider civic centre around St Peter’s Street, close to Norwich Market, the Guildhall and other important historic buildings. Photographed in soft evening light, the image highlights the contrast between the heavy stone base, broad brick elevations and the slender vertical tower. The Bethel Street viewpoint reveals a less commonly photographed side of the building and places the tower against an open sky rather than the busier principal frontage. The scene is suitable for editorial subjects including Norwich architecture, British local government, civic buildings, Art Deco, interwar design, Norfolk tourism, urban heritage
