A flight of steps with metal handrails rises between carefully clipped hedges towards the recessed public doors, while the curved upper section and colonnaded ground floor create a formal civic focal point in the centre of the composition. The present courthouse opened in 1990 after the previous Sheriff Court in Hope Street, which dated from 1868, had become seriously overcrowded as court business increased. The Camelon building was purpose-built as a modern judicial complex and was originally arranged with four courtrooms on the upper floor. A later project created an additional civil courtroom, providing more capacity and modern digital court recording facilities. Falkirk Sheriff Court deals with both criminal and civil business and forms part of Scotland's Sheriffdom of Tayside, Central and Fife. Justice of the Peace Court business and associated court administration are also carried out at the site. The courthouse is an important public service building for Falkirk and the surrounding area, used by sheriffs, legal professionals, court staff, jurors, witnesses and members of the public. Its broad symmetrical frontage, red sandstone cladding, curved entrance pavilion and landscaped approach are characteristic of late twentieth-century civic architecture, while the dramatic overcast sky in this image gives the exterior a particularly imposing appearance.
