More information:

Panoramic view along Nethergate in Dundee city centre, combining the Mary Slessor memorial, historic architecture, landscaped church grounds, public transport and everyday street activity. In the foreground, a rough-hewn stone monument carries a circular bronze portrait relief of Mary Slessor and a rectangular commemorative plaque. It stands beside a carefully maintained lawn within the grounds of Dundee City Churches, where mature trees, trimmed shrubs and historic masonry provide a green contrast to the busy road and commercial buildings beyond. Mary Slessor was born in Aberdeen in 1848 but grew up in Dundee, where she worked in the city’s jute mills before becoming a missionary. She travelled to Calabar, in present-day Nigeria, in 1876 and became known for her religious, educational and humanitarian work. Her long association with Dundee and her prominence in Scottish missionary history are commemorated by the memorial visible in the foreground. Part of the City Churches complex appears on the left, with Gothic pointed windows, buttressed stonework and steeply pitched roofs. The site includes St Mary’s Parish Church and the Steeple Church, buildings associated with one of Dundee’s oldest places of Christian worship. The surviving complex occupies a prominent position between Nethergate and the central shopping streets. Across the road is a varied row of traditional multi-storey buildings containing shops and other city-centre premises. Their sandstone and rendered façades, chimney stacks, dormer windows and changing rooflines illustrate the architectural development of Nethergate over different periods. A green double-decker Xplore Dundee bus travels through the scene alongside cars, showing the continuing role of the street as a principal public transport corridor. Strong sunlight illuminates the lawn and surrounding buildings, while a large bank of dark cloud approaches beneath vivid blue sky.
