More information:

A wide interior view inside V&A Dundee, Scotland’s dedicated design museum, showing the building’s dramatic multi-level public atrium and its extensive warm-toned timber finishes. Long, irregular horizontal wooden panels line the walls and sweep around the open space, creating a strong geometric pattern that contrasts with the pale structural beams, exposed ceiling and glazed balustrades above. The elevated viewpoint looks across an upper-floor walkway and down towards the museum shop, where books, gifts, design products and souvenirs are arranged on brightly lit retail displays. Visitors can be seen browsing at ground level, helping convey the scale of this spacious contemporary cultural building. V&A Dundee was designed by internationally recognised Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and opened in September 2018. It was the first V&A museum outside London, Scotland’s first dedicated design museum and Kuma’s first completed building in the United Kingdom. The architecture was inspired by the rugged cliffs of Scotland’s east coast, while the interior uses layered timber surfaces and flowing circulation routes to produce an atmospheric, sculptural visitor environment. Located beside the River Tay, the museum forms a major centrepiece of the long-term regeneration of Dundee Waterfront. Its permanent Scottish Design Galleries explore the contribution of Scottish creativity across architecture, fashion, furniture, engineering, healthcare and digital design, while temporary exhibitions draw visitors from Scotland, the wider UK and overseas. This image illustrates museum architecture, cultural tourism, destination design, urban regeneration and the visitor economy, as well as the practical integration of exhibition, circulation and retail spaces within a landmark modern building. The photograph captures the clean lines, dramatic scale and distinctive wooden interior that have made V&A Dundee one of the city’s best-known attractions.
