Jute lapping machine by J H Riley and Co of Bury displayed at Verdant Works Museum in Dundee, Scotland, UK. The large cast-iron textile machine has exposed flywheels, gears, rollers and mechanical linkages which demonstrate the heavy engineering involved in preparing jute fibre for later stages of manufacture. Lapping machinery formed part of the sequence of industrial processes used to turn raw jute into a more even material suitable for further drawing, spinning and weaving. Verdant Works preserves working and static machinery associated with Dundee's once dominant jute industry and interprets both the technology and the lives of mill workers. The photograph is suitable for editorial coverage of jute manufacturing, textile machinery, industrial engineering, Victorian technology, factory equipment, Dundee heritage, Bury engineering, mechanical design, mills, manufacturing history, museum collections and the Industrial Revolution. The open framework of the machine reveals belts, wheels and moving components that would normally have operated continuously in a noisy working mill, making this a detailed technical image of historic textile production equipment.
