Jute overhead sack sewing machine by Robertson and Orchar Ltd displayed at Verdant Works Museum in Dundee, Scotland, UK. The substantial green-painted machine incorporates large gears, wheels, shafts and sewing mechanisms designed for the industrial manufacture of heavy jute sacks. Dundee Heritage Trust records that Robertson and Orchar Ltd of Dundee made overhead sewing machines used to sew jute cloth into sacks, with the overhead stitch particularly useful for strong bags such as coal sacks because it was difficult to unravel. The Dundee engineering company developed from the Wallace Foundry and became a significant supplier of mill and textile machinery. The photograph is suitable for editorial coverage of jute manufacturing, sack production, Dundee engineering, Robertson and Orchar, textile machinery, industrial sewing, factory equipment, Scottish manufacturing, Victorian industry, mechanical engineering and museum collections. The vivid green paint, exposed gear train and heavy cast-metal construction make the machine visually distinctive and show the robust equipment required to turn woven jute cloth into durable industrial packaging.
