A makeshift street sign reading “Schimmi-Gasse”, created by fans, still hangs there today. Before Horst-Schimanski-Gasse received an official street sign, there was a long-running dispute between fans and the city council. The alley itself (originally unnamed) was only named in 2014 following fierce disputes – against opposition from the city council on the grounds that it was a “fictional character” and there was a risk of confusion with the footballer Horst Szymaniak (“Schimmi”).
