Guests sit in a takoyaki restaurant in Osaka's Dōtonbori entertainment district, Japan, beneath a colourful ceiling decoration of a samurai mask and an octopus. Takoyaki, fried octopus balls, are considered the city's signature dish and are served both as street food and in restaurants. Street vendor Tomekichi Endo invented the dish in the 1930s.
