A stamp box stands at Hosshinmon-oji on the Kumano Kodo near Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Pilgrims press a red stamp into their pilgrim's book (Nōkyōchō) here. The stamps document progress toward the Kumano Sanzan and the 99 Oji shrines. They symbolise purification, devotion and the reaching of holy places, similar to the Way of St James to Santiago de Compostela.
