An Ise-Shimekazari with a wooden plaque inscribed "笑門" (Shōmon, "Gate of Laughter") hangs on a lintel in Oharai-machi, Ise, Mie Prefecture, Japan. The inscription alludes to the Japanese proverb "Warau kado ni wa fuku kitaru", "good fortune comes to the house from which laughter comes". The amulet, woven from rice straw with dried plants and strips of shide paper, is a form of the shimenawa purification symbol characteristic of the Ise region. The combination of Shinto purification symbolism and everyday wisdom is typical of religious practice in Japan.
