A family strolls through Oharai-machi, the historic pilgrimage and shopping street in front of the Naikū of Ise-jingū, Ise, Mie Prefecture, Japan. Hand-painted paper lanterns, chōchin, hang from bamboo poles above the alley. The traditional wooden shopfronts date back to the Edo period; for centuries the street has served as the access route for pilgrims, Okagemairi, to Japan's most important Shinto shrine.
