Four people are sitting around an irori in a traditional restaurant in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan: a member of staff in blue uniform and three guests, including two non-Japanese women, are chatting whilst eating together. In front of them, ceramic bowls containing Japanese dishes are arranged around the smouldering hearth. Irori restaurants offer guests an introduction to Japan’s traditional hearth cuisine
