Eva Eberwein stands in front of the roughly 200-year-old Thurgau cider pear tree in the garden of the Mia and Hermann Hesse House in Gaienhofen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, beside the information panel "Pear Tree – House Tree". Starting in 1907, Hermann Hesse laid out the garden himself around the newly built house on a 9,000-square-metre plot of meadow and farmland, planning paths, flower beds, trees and hedges.
