. St Anns Well, pump room , George St, Buxton, High Peak, Derbyshire, England, UK, SK17 6AY. Photographed on 20 August 2023. The Pump Room is well worth a visit alone. The newly-restored, stunning late Victorian building was erected to resolve the overcrowding of the town's thermal baths and provide a place for locals and holidaymakers to "'take the waters', commune and relax. The building is dedicated to Arnemetia, the Romano-British goddess of the sacred grove, referencing Buxton's history as one of Britain's only two Roman bath towns. Aquae Arnemetiae. The background to historic well is that public fountains and wells were once practical infrastructure for drinking water as well as decorative civic features; In many towns their original utility declined after piped domestic water became universal, leaving them as monuments, landmarks or restored street furniture. Within the history of diagnostic imaging, the National Health Service, founded in 1948, created a universal healthcare system whose hospitals, ambulances, clinics and public-information campaigns became familiar features of British life; Medical technology has continually changed the appearance of those services. Current 2026 context around historic well is that public drinking-water provision has renewed relevance because refill schemes seek to reduce single-use plastic bottles, while historical fountains require maintenance if they are to remain functional rather than purely decorative. Against the 2026 backdrop for diagnostic imaging, seasonal vaccination continues to be a major public-health tool , particularly for influenza and respiratory illness among higher-risk groups; Campaign material illustrates how health services encourage uptake through everyday communication.
