. Deep Purple on tour poster, 16 July 2023, Laszlo Papp Arena, Budapest, Hungary. Photographed on 28 April 2023. Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in London in 1968. They are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, but their musical approach has changed over the years. Originally formed as a psychedelic rock and progressive rock band, they shifted to a heavier sound with their 1970 album Deep Purple in Rock. Deep Purple (together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath) have been referred to as the unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies. They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as the globe's loudest band for a 1972 concert at London's Rainbow Theatre and have sold over 100 million albums worldwide. Current line up:. Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Ian Gillan. Don Airey, Simon McBride. For band, the historical context is that concert culture changed with amplification, arena touring, festivals and digital promotion, yet the basic relationship between performer, venue and audience remains central; Older gig photographs can gain significance as bands, buildings and local scenes evolution. Looking at consumer culture, the longer history is that printed and graphic ephemera are highly effective dating evidence; Tickets, stamps, posters, comics, manuals and vouchers combine wording, typography, colour and branding in forms that are often discarded after use. For band, the 2026 context is that live music remains culturally important but venues face pressure from operating costs, redevelopment and evolving audience habits; England's dedicated 15% business-rates relief for eligible live-music venues during 2026/27 reflects concern about their economic sustainability. In 2026, consumer culture remains relevant because physical comics, manuals and vouchers now coexist with apps, e-books and online instructions; Their material form has growing relevance to collectors.
