More information:

Salford-born punk poet John Cooper Clarke performs on stage at the Stanley Theatre, University of Liverpool, on Saturday 2 July 2011, supporting influential post-punk group The Fall during a three-night run at the university venue. Dressed in his trademark dark jacket, narrow trousers, sunglasses and sharply styled hair, Clarke stands at a microphone reading from sheets of paper, with amplifiers, stage monitors, stools and coloured concert lighting visible around him. The vertical live-performance photograph captures the spare theatrical style that has long defined his appearances: one voice, one microphone and fast, rhythmically delivered verse rooted in northern English speech, street observation, satire and black humour. Known as the Bard of Salford and one of the leading figures associated with punk poetry, Clarke emerged in the late 1970s performing alongside punk and post-punk acts. His recordings and live work helped bring spoken-word performance into rock venues, while poems including Beasley Street, Evidently Chickentown and I Wanna Be Yours became widely recognised beyond the original punk audience. His relationship with The Fall is especially relevant to this Liverpool appearance because both acts grew from Greater Manchester's late-1970s alternative culture and developed reputations for uncompromising language, distinctive northern voices and enduring influence. The Fall's concert archive records performances at the Stanley Theatre on 30 June, 1 July and 2 July 2011, with the final night taking place on the date shown here. The image is useful for editorial coverage of British punk history, spoken word, live poetry, post-punk culture, music venues, northern creativity, literary performance and the continuing crossover between poetry and independent music. Indoor stage lighting creates red, blue and amber highlights against a dark background; no outdoor sky, season or weather is visible
