Large graphic mural depicting Debbie Harry, singer and co-founder of the American rock band Blondie, covers a wall at 2 Bleecker Street near its junction with the Bowery in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Created in 2017 by artist Shepard Fairey in association with the LISA Project NYC, the artwork presents Harry with platinum-blonde hair, red lips, angular earrings and leopard-print clothing. Its bold black, cream, orange and red palette combines portraiture with concert posters, typography and imagery linked to Blondie’s career. The central portrait was based on a photograph by New York music photographer Bobby Grossman. Surrounding details include Blondie graphics, stylised band figures and a ticket advertising a Central Park performance on Wednesday 27 June. The collage-like composition reflects Fairey’s poster, screen-printing and street-art aesthetic while celebrating Harry as an influential female figure in punk, new wave and popular music. The mural stood close to the former CBGB nightclub at 315 Bowery. Founded by Hilly Kristal in 1973, CBGB initially took its name from Country, Bluegrass and Blues, although it became internationally associated with original underground rock. During the 1970s, its small stage helped establish a distinctive New York scene that included Blondie, Television, the Ramones, Talking Heads, Patti Smith Group, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, and other emerging performers. Blondie developed within this downtown artistic community before achieving international commercial success with songs blending punk, pop, disco, reggae and new wave. Harry’s distinctive appearance, commanding stage presence and songwriting partnership with Chris Stein made her one of the period’s most recognisable performers. The photograph records the mural beneath a partly cloudy sky before it was replaced in 2022 by Fairey’s tribute to the New York hardcore band Bad Brains. It therefore preserves a temporary work of public art and a changing Bowery streetsca
