Béals are man-made channels used to bring water to fields to irrigate crops. The béal pictured here runs alongside the River Homol in the Cévennes region of southern France. Although the Cévennes is an area of heavy rain it also experiences hot, dry summers and the béals provide much-needed water for the irrigation of gardens and crops. The rights to take water from béals are jealously guarded. A small fee is paid to the local Mairie for water rights.
