Buy the right image licence for your project and save money using our handy price calculator.

If you’re new to the image buying, licences and pricing can be really confusing. Here’s a breakdown of how to make sure you buy the right licences and only pay for what you need.

Understand the licence type you are buying

On Alamy we sell two types of image licence, rights managed (RM) and royalty free (RF).

You can find out which licence type an image is available for on the image page, for example the below image is available under a rights-managed licence:

Rights managed

You can find out everything you need to know about these licence types in our blog ‘Licensing stock images with Alamy’, but here’s a quick summary:

  1. Rights Managed (RM) – the pricing for rights-managed licences is based on how you are going to use the image. The price will be calculated by our price calculator depending on a variety of things such as image size, print run and image placement.
  2. Royalty Free (RF) – royalty-free licences are based on the size of the image file you need to buy. The bigger the image size, the more you pay. The size of the image you need will vary depending on your project. For example, if you were designing a billboard you’d need a bigger image than if you were using an image on a webpage.

Find out more about the files sizes with our handy infographic.

Choosing the right licence

On each of our image pages (both RM and RF) you’ll see a list of the most popular image licences bought by our customers. These are our ‘popular pricing packages’, designed to make it as easy as possible for you to licence your images. If one of these suits how you’re going to use the image in your project, just select the licence you need and click the ‘download’ button.

You can find out more about our popular pricing packages by checking out our blog: ‘How to choose the right pricing package on Alamy’.

Sometimes your image use might not fit into one of the popular pricing packages and you’ll need to look at our alternative pricing options – these are available at the bottom of the popular prices list and the options you get will depend on whether the image you are looking at is RF or RM.

Choosing another royalty-free licence

RF images are bought per size, so you just need to select the file size you need and make your purchase. Simple!

Choosing another rights-managed licence

This is where our price calculator comes in. With rights-managed licences you can be really specific about how you’re going to use the image and tailor the licence to meet your exact needs.

To find the price calculator, all you need to do is click the ‘Choose another rights-managed licence’ dropdown:

Choose another rights-managed licence

The price calculator will guide you through what fields you need to fill out, starting with the first field which is about how you’re going to use the image. You’ll know which fields to fill out as the calculator automatically turns the relevant fields white with a blue arrow to left, as shown in the below example:

When you’ve filled out all the relevant details, the price for your image licence will be calculated.  Once you’ve got your price, all you need to do to buy the image is hit ‘Download’ and you’ll be taken to the checkout page.
