Hanging by thumbs, 'the trapeze', means, quite simply, being suspended from just your thumbs. It was used to deal with difficult prisoners, including those who tried to escape. After being suspended like that for a long time, thumbs became deformed and hands disabled. They would then be unable to fulfill their labor duties, making them subject to more punishment. Johannes Friedrich Miescher (August 13, 1844 - August 26, 1895) was a Swiss physician and biologist. Miescher isolated various phosphate-rich chemicals, which he called nuclein (now nucleic acids), from the nuclei of white blood cells in 1869, paving the way for the identification of DNA as the carrier of inheritance. The significance of the discovery, first published in 1871, was not at first apparent, and it was Albrecht Kossel who made the initial inquiries into its chemical structure. Illustration of Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleyev (1834-1907), Russian chemist. Mendeleyev (or Mendeleev) was initially an indifferent student, but left college at the top of his class. After attending the 1st Karlsruhe Congress (1860), Mendelayev worked on organizing trends in atomic weights and valency. From this, he developed the first true periodic table of the elements (final version published in 1871). This contained some gaps, but as new elements were discovered to have the properties predicted by the table, Mendeleyev became famous worldwide. Thomas Henry Huxley (May 4, 1825 - June 29, 1895) was an English biologist, known as ''Darwin's Bulldog'' for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Huxley's famous 1860 debate with Samuel Wilberforce was a key moment in the wider acceptance of evolution, and in his own career. Huxley was slow to accept some of Darwin's ideas, such as gradualism, and was undecided about natural selection, but despite this he was wholehearted in his public support of Darwin. Samuel Wilberforce (September 7, 1805 - July 19, 1873) was an English bishop in the Church of England and one of the greatest public speakers of his day. The great bent of his energies was ceaselessly directed to the better organization of his diocese and to the furtherance of schemes for increasing the influence and efficiency of the church. He is probably best remembered today for his opposition to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution - most notably at a famous debate in 1860.
