An old engraving of The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 from the waterfront. It is from an American history book of 1895. The conflagration burned in the city of Chicago, Illinois, USA during October 8–10 that year. The fire killed approximately 300 people, destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles of the city including over 17,000 structures, and left more than 100,000 residents homeless. The fire began in a neighbourhood southwest of the city centre. A long period of hot, dry, windy conditions, and the wooden construction contributed to the devastation.
