Christopher Columbus (1451-1506), Genoa, Italy, where he was born. Italy. Columbus discovered America by mistake, thinking he was in Asia. After his project was rejected by the Portuguese king John II, he received Spanish backing and set off with three ships ( Santa María. Niña. Pinta ) and 120 men. On 12 October 1492 he landed on a small island in the Bahamas (San Salvador), believing he had found the Indies.
