In 1926, the association of youth in the German Navy Bund was founded. After the end of the First World War , the idea of erecting a memorial to the fallen Marines emerged. In 1936, the Naval Memorial was inaugurated in Laboe. In the time of the national socialism the naval federation lost its independence. On 4 March 1935, the name was changed to National Socialist German Navy Association - Nationalfozialiftifcher - Deutcher Marine-Bund. The League was subordinate to the Commander in Chief of the Kriegsmarine. The aim of the Navy League in the era of National Socialism was a strengthening of Nazi expansionism, in the aim of "dissemination and preservation of faith in the necessity of German sea power and the will to sea power".
