Nagarkot is a hill resort to the north east of Kathmandu This series of 28 pictures show some of the most dramatic clouds I have ever seen These landscapes were captured in October 2005 using a digital camera without its infrared filter and the result is the same as traditional black and white infrared film It produces a surreal grainy image with darkened skies extra contrast and often a darker slightly ethereal mood Foliage and trees are white due to the IR light it reflects The result is a dramatic graphic and striking image in B W B W We stayed at the Nagarkot Farmhouse popular with local expats which enjoys tremendous views at sunset and sunrise These pictures were taken in the afternoon which is the best time for infrared photography The clouds are often thought of as an obstacle shrouding the white peaks but here they form the key feature of the composition making powerful and potent imagery that reflects the wonder of nature climate and weather on the planet In many of the shots you can make out distant terracing of paddies and glimpse the far summits of the Himalayas I think of them as cloudscapes or skyscapes with deep black sky and are almost the landscape as abstract art
