TORTURE - ESTRAPADE An illustration of the Estrapade, or 'Question Extraordinary', used by the Inquisition on suspected heretics. The victim is hung by one shoulder, with heavy weights tied to his feet: usually his shoulder is rapidly dislocated. His hands, tied behind his back by rope, is subjected to a cruel tourniquet, which squeezes blood from his fingers. After a facsimile of a woodcut in J. Millaeus, Praxis Criminalis Persequendi, 1541.
