During the rainy season, the canal gets contaminated with trash and sewage from the nearby dump. The local government has refused to grant construction permits to the main church sheltering the Haitian migrants in the area claiming that it is in a risk zone. However, the pastor of the church decided to move forward with the construction of the homes for the migrants noting that the situation is a humanitarian crisis
