AlphaBay started in 2014 by Alexandre Cazes and grew to become the largest marketplace on the darknet with an estimated 40,000 vendors, 400,000 users, over 250,000 listings for drugs and 100,000 for other illicit goods and services such as weapons, credit card data, hacking tools and counterfeit items. The DoJ revealed that USD450m of trades were conducted between May 2015 and February 2017. AlphaBay was seized on 4 July 2017 followed by the seizure of the Hansa marketplace (see image JNT0JY) on 20 June 2017 by the Dutch National Police, FBI and Europol, the culmination of Operation Bayonet. By covertly taking control of Hansa a month earlier than announced, Dutch police were able to track and identify vendors and buyers opening new accounts in the wake of Alphabay’s seizure. Cazes was arrested in Thailand with close to USD12m of assets including 4 Lamborghini cars on 5 July and hung himself with a towel whilst in custody.
