The cap is of cast iron, surmountedby eight 3-in. x i-in. wrought-iron ribs, forming an ornamentalcage over the outlet, with pointed ends gathered together atthe center. Galvanized iron ladder rungs are built in the brickwork for ladders both inside and outside the shaft. The orna-mental cage, constructed over the top of each chimney, sup-ports, in turn, a system of vertical lightning rods, all tippedwith platinum points about 18 ins. long. The vertical lightning-rods are connected to two lightning cables of stranded copper.
