On leaving Cosham agood view is obtained of Portsmouth with itsancient castle, where, during the French Revo-lution, nearly 8000 prisoners were confined;as also were the Dutch prisoners taken at thebattle of Camperdown in 1797. From the top of Portsdown Hill, nearly 400ft. high, a magnificent view of both sea andland is obtained. The dockyard, the town hall and the parishchurch of St. Marys stand out in bold relief.
