The Pyramid (Piramide di Caio Cestio) was built by Caius Cestius a senior 1st century BC Roman magistrate as a tomb or burial place for himself. Made of white marble the pyramid rises to a height of 36 metres. The Porta San Paolo is one of the southern gates in the 19 kilometre circuit of the 3rd century Aurelian Walls.
